Breast Cancer

Breast cancer starts when some breast cells (usually in the milk ducts or milk-producing lobules) stop following normal growth-control signals.These cells begin to divide too quickly and do not die when they should.The rapidly dividing abnormal cells build up to form a mass (lump) of tissue in the breast.This mass is called a tumor and can invade the nearby normal breast tissue.If not treated, cancer cells can break away from this tumor and spread to other parts of the body through the blood or lymphatic system.

Progression & Spread

Breast cancer starts as abnormal cells in the breast that divide rapidly and fail to die, forming a detectable lump or tumor.

The growing tumor invades and destroys surrounding normal breast tissue.

Cancer cells break away and spread through lymphatic vessels to nearby lymph nodes under the arm or near the breastbone.

From lymph nodes or directly via bloodstream, cells metastasize to distant organs.

Common distant sites include bones, lungs, liver, and brain.

Metastatic cells form new tumors composed of breast cancer cells at these sites.

This progression from local tumor to metastasis determines staging and treatment from stage 0 to IV.

Breast cancer management emphasizes early detection through self-exams, clinical breast exams, and mammography for more effective treatment.

A multidisciplinary team, including surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, nurses, and support experts, plans comprehensive care.

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy target remaining cancer cells systemically and locally.

Hormone therapy or targeted drugs address specific cancer characteristics like hormone receptors.
