Radiation Oncology

Radiation therapy uses high-energy radiation beams, such as X-rays or protons, to precisely target and destroy cancer cells, shrinking tumors and controlling their growth. It is often used as a local treatment modality, meaning it focuses on a specific area of the body rather than affecting the whole system. The radiation damages the DNA of cancer cells, causing them to die or stop multiplying, while healthy cells are better able to recover. This therapy is carefully planned to maximize damage to cancer cells while minimizing harm to surrounding healthy tissues, and it is commonly used before or after surgery, as well as for palliative care in advanced disease.
